Ten Year Anniversary of Guantánamo – Rally and March Today (Wednesday)

Detainees at the U.S. military base at Guantánamo Bay launched a hunger strike today marking the prison’s 10th anniversary, inspired in part by U.S. activists who have called for a national day of action. We’re responding to this call for action with a rally and march Jan. 11 starting at 3 PM in Public Square.

We call on Christians and Jews among us to recognize how we’d feel if imprisoned largely based on our religious tradition and/or ethnicity, and call for the concept of religious and humanitarian unity in expressing support for the people who’ve been placed in this prison.

Editor’s opinion: I also ask us to remember the over one million people of Iraqi ethnicity who have been killed in the past 20 years or so by people who–not understanding the situation–volunteered for armed service in Iraq. I ask us to remember with sadness how that war had been started in the name of 9/11, unjustly. Given that the population of Iraq is only some 32 million, one million murders does seem to qualify as a genocidal crime, much like the crime that had been perpetrated in World War II against people of Jewish ethnicity and faith.

Guantánamo Detainees Launch Hunger Strike to Protest Prison’s 10th Anniversary

Occupy Clevelander Harrassed for Sidewalk Chalk Art

On January 9 a person who has volunteered with the movement was harassed by a person who is a police officer for exercising his First Amendment Right. He chose to express himself by decorating the public sidewalk with chalk, something many do without thought that it would cause any harm. The officer complained the artist was making a mess on the sidewalk and soon after asked for the artist’s ID. Multiple police vehicles soon showed up and made the artist cleaned up the chalk.

Editor’s opinion: I ask for reasonable understanding on the part of people who are police that we are working together on creating a better, more caring community for all of us–sidewalk chalk does not cause any damage and it is an interesting sight for people strolling around our public spaces. Please support the patriotic tradition of expression in this country!

Call for Volunteers at Beachland Saturday

The Beachland is holding a benefit for the movement Saturday, and we’d like several volunteers:

  • Two trusted door people to handle the admissions
  • A raffle ticket person
  • Volunteers to stay at the Info Tent

There’s a thread about this on the Occupy Cleveland Non-Violently Facebook Group if you’d like to get involved.

Weird WePay Problem

Someone has set up a weird WePay link and has been posting it on the #OccupyCleveland cause page and twitter stream. Before making donations, please make sure that the link you are using to donate is: https://www.wepay.com/donate/occupycleveland.

Food and Other Donated Items and Services Needed at Info Tent

When visiting the info tent, please think of bringing down some healthy and delicious hot meals and/or some easily preparable food such as tuna, easy mac, ramen, healthy choice fresh mixers, soups–things that don’t have to be refrigerated but that can be microwaved… canned fruit. The food situation at the tent has been pretty sparse when it comes to healthy items so hot meals will be much appreciated. Also please consider bringing some dog food as there is at least one dog who stays at the tent much of the time.

Some occupiers have been doing this almost nonstop since the start of the movement here three months ago, and need help. Please consider asking people at the tent if you can take them to your home for a shower or if you can help do some laundry.

Other needed items: foot and hand warmers, warm socks especially! More people volunteering to stay at the tent for regular shifts will be much appreciated.

Update: Call for help to Prevent Eviction of Cancer Sufferer in Canal Fulton

UPDATE (Jan. 11): Occupy Canton is taking the lead on this. We have learned that she has at least a couple more weeks at her home than we originally thought.

On Monday Jan. 2 we received word of a woman in Canal Fulton who is suffering from late stage cancer. She had been asked to vacate her home by Jan. 13. In the GA Jan. 2 we pretty much agreed to help. She is asking for emotional support and presence. We are coordinating with Occupy Canton & maybe Occupy Akron as well.

Call for Phone Activism – Occupy Oakland Protesters Beaten and Arrested

Call to action from Occupy Oakland, who Saturday evening faced unreasonable police beatings to disband a march against police brutality and unlawful detention. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/occupyoaktown/)

Here are some contact numbers: please be respectful and calm:

  • Alameda DA: 510-272-6222
  • Jean Quan – Mayor: 510-238-3141
  • Howard Jordan – Police Chief: 510-238-3076

I called and left messages, and today (Monday) someone with the police called me back. He said that one of the protestors had a half stick of dynamite and others were slingshotting marbles. I told him that I am from a different area of the country and I have not witnessed this type of behavior here, but that I am certain most people who identify with the movement are peaceful and to please keep this thought in mind with respect to the people that were arrested. We talked kind of cordially although he was a bit emotionally stressed. When I said that the protesters are doing this because this country has been having serious problems, he agreed. I said that I hoped my phone call helped in some way and we left it at that.

Call for Informational Material

The Base Operations WAG is asking for more diverse flyers to be available at the tent, and asking for other WAGs to create materials. Not just about “We are Occupy Cleveland” and our methodology, but flyers about positions, information, etc. Especially of interest would be material about our activities pertaining to helping people who have suffered from foreclosures.

Occupy Plain Dealer is asking for contributions! Contact the Tent/Base Operations workgroup for more info: occupycle.baseoperations@gmail.com or nvzftw@gmail.com.

Fiscal Controls Process Meeting Recap

We are working on auditable, transparent measures of managing finances. This will help us meet requirements for the OWS grant. The Fiscal Controls group met Jan. 2–here are the notes from the meeting: http://unju.st/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1329&p=6420#p6420.

Consensus Facilitation Workshop Recap

Major parts of the discussion:

  • Need for solid process and strong facilitation team.
  • Need to eliminate or severely limit direct responses. Our direct responses tend to turn proposals into debates instead of a more inclusive discussion that values everyone’s input.
  • Consistent opening and closing ceremonies are extremely important to conducting effective meetings.
  • Incorporate ice breakers into a regular spot maybe 10 to 15 minutes before the GA. Input from Comfort for ideas?
  • Possibly need to revisit and reaffirm our group agreement on how meetings should be run.

Meeting Notes: http://unju.st/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1340&p=6417#p6417

Additional Resources on Consensus Facilitation:

Call for Help with Fliers

On January 22nd, from 1pm-3pm, there will be a community meeting at the Cleveland Heights library. We’re going to put up fliers around Cleveland Heights in the weeks before, saying “We want to hear what you have to say! Please, come join us for a community meet and greet.” This is an opportunity to get out into the public, find out what people’s concerns are and see if we can help address those concerns. Our goal is not only to get community feedback, but to hopefully get more people involved in Occupy Cleveland.

Bank Walk-away Project

We’re considering working on a project involving 44 foreclosed properties from which banks have walked away. Any addresses / ideas for properties can still be emailed to occupyclevelandpermanentbasecamp (_at symbol_) gmail.com

According to the article Northeast Ohio Plagued by 30,000 vacant homes awaiting demolition, “Former Cuyahoga County Treasurer Jim Rokakis said he believes the number of condemned homes and buildings in Northeast Ohio has ballooned to 30,000. Rokakis blamed foreclosures and irresponsible banks, investment firms and individuals who have walked away or ignored their distressed properties.”

Call for Information

Dear Readers/Occupiers:

People who are planning events and work groups–please email these events to occupyclevelandstories (_at symbol_) gmail.com so I can post them rather than having dig and dig every morning through the forums and multiple facebook pages to find these items. It is taking between one to three hours to do this Digest every morning, so emailing info to me will help me get this out more quickly.

For posting to event calender on occupycleveland.com, please email occupyCLE.media@gmail.com.

Please continue to post GA notes daily in the forum “General Assembly” here: http://unju.st/forum/. It is vital to post these notes for the larger Occupy community so that we know what items are being consented to and what events are consensus events. Thank you to those who have been posting notes!

Peace,

The Temporary Editor

What Would You Like to See?

Please mail letters to the editor, story ideas, meeting times, articles, etc. to occupyclevelandstories (_at symbol_) gmail.com. Also, the Daily Digest is having a working group meeting Sunday, 10/30 at noon in the Tom Johnson (NW) quadrant of Public Square. If not right in the quadrant, please check the white tent west of the square.

Call for Poetry/Creative Writing/Art Submissions – we’re looking for poetry seeds from the larger poetry community, again, a great outreach action. We’re putting together an Occupy Cleveland poetry zine and I’d like to feature some creative items in the Daily Digest as well. Please send submissions to occupyclevelandpoetry (_at symbol_) gmail.com.

Thank you to all people who are making information available!
